Practical Completion at 'Energy Village'.
We have reached Practical Completion at the Northern Gas Networks research site at Low Thornley, Gateshead.
The project involved building nine homes from different building eras to create a unique ‘Customer Energy Village’.
The village consists of three 1910 terraced homes, two semi-detached 1930s houses, a 1950s bungalow, two flats from the 1970s and a detached home from the 1990s, to represent the most common residential types that have been built in the last 120 years.
The village will be used as a testing facility to see how hydrogen power can work inside domestic properties from different eras. It will provide a real understanding of the decarbonisation challenges faced and how energy use can be reduced throughout the UK housing stock .
At a time of an energy and carbon crisis, the Energy Village will support research and innovation into the energy systems transition, vulnerabilities and new digital technologies, to deliver solutions, skills and growth in support of the UK Governments 'Net Zero 2050 Strategy'.
